Loaves & Fishes Network

The Loaves and Fishes Network (L&FN) was established in 2006 when it opened an office and depot in East London, South Africa.  Within its first two years it expanded its support from 5 community-initiated Children’s Centres for Poverty Violence & AIDS affected children to 34, as well as 9 community programmes in rural villages – reaching 2,500 children.

Each Early Childhood Development Centre (ECDC) supported by the L&FN is assisted to offer high quality childcare and stimulate intellectual and psycho-social development through:

  • Practical and theoretical pre-school training for teachers and guardians
  • Premises, playground and equipment renovation and upgrades
  • Feeding Programmes based on sound nutritional principles
  • Registers of children in need
  • Advice and referral for legal, social and medical issues
  • Confidential, effective response to children in crisis identified in the centre, or from its neighbourhood; such as those who are abused, gravely ill or abandoned.

In delivering our objective to re-establish wider links in Africa, the Fund has been working with L&FN since 2008 to explore how we might help them to develop their mission.  In 2009 and again in 2011 we provided around £10k to help L&FN when government funding was at risk.  We agreed to provide funding totalling £25k for the construction of a pre-school building at Masonwabe, some 20km inland East London within the Mdantsane township area. Started towards the end of 2011, it was completed in June 2012.

Since then, we have provided a regular annual contribution to L&FN’s core costs and occasional funds to help individual ECDCs with equipment both for their playgrounds and, for example, for water tanks.
